Have eyes bigger than one's stomachJoanna Latka back to the Salgadeiras Gallery with her latest works focusing this time the subject of observation and interest, in the topic of Portuguese gastronomy. Taking this expression, which curiously also exists in their mother language, Polish, Joanna Latka, with her curious eyes and artistic sensitivity, portraits various situations in Portugal characteristics using typical Portuguese dishes. This, however, is only a pretext, a metaphor that Latka used to characterize a people, their habits and customs. The premise "I observe, once I am," stated by herself, assumes a new aesthetic and artistic aspect. Drawings of a daily basis in which Latka is always very conscientious, serves as a starting point for his artistic process.

The legends and stories contribute to the cultural formation of the people, as they build a certain way of life, in their moral or the way they act through the habits, customs and language of the picturesque region.
Legend is a whimsical tale transmitted by oral tradition through time.
From the fantastic and / or fictional, the real facts and legends combine with historical facts that are simply unrealistic product of the imagination of human adventure.

The picturesque language, typical of a region, used in the reporting of the facts results in a form of expression and beliefs preserved, form the cultural identity of people and a nation.

Since the foreign artist living in Portugal, Joanna Latka chose this theme to highlight the importance of the roots of a people that in different contexts and so entered the life of each one.

A VIDA QUOTIDIANA DESENHADA PELA ARTISTA POLACA JOANNA LATKA

O Centro Cultural do Cartaxo (CCC) volta a receber a partir do próximo dia 14 de Fevereiro, às 21h30, a obra de Joanna Latka. A artista traz um conjunto de desenhos inéditos, nos quais explora uma nova técnica em papel canelado. A exposição resulta da parceria entre o CCC e a Galeria das Salgadeiras, que já trouxe ao Cartaxo 6 exposições de artistas plásticos de renome nacional e internacional.

Nascida em Cracóvia, na Polónia, em 1978, a artista é docente no Departamento de Artes Visuais, na Escola Superior de Educação de Coimbra. No curriculum conta com 11 exposições individuais – uma das quais no Cartaxo, em 2008 – e 16 colectivas, em espaços tão diversos como a Bedeteca de Lisboa, o Lagar de Azeite em Oeiras, ou o Centro de Arte Moderna Solvay, em Cracóvia.

A artista assume para si a premissa “Observo, logo sou”. Premissa que atravessa todo o trabalho apresentado. Os desenhos são retratos de um quotidiano construído de pormenores, de movimentos, de gente onde se adivinham familiaridades. São lugares urbanos oferecidos aos olhos do observador, como se este assomasse a uma janela criada pela artista como observatório para o mundo.

A exposição poderá ser visitada até ao dia 11 de Abril, de quarta a domingo, das 15h00 às 24h00.

Os desenhos de Joanna Latka para Prof. Piotr Jargusz

Quem pergunta recebe demasiadas respostas. Joanna Latka observa. Consciente e inconscientemente regressa aos tempos em que não passava pela cabeça de ninguém perguntar para que existia a arte, porque o mundo sem imagens seria simplesmente inconcebível.

(...) Será que a artista, formada pelo Instituto de Belas Artes (que é a escola superior de pedagogia mais antiga na Polónia, com artistas conceituados e localizada no importante centro da Europa), com diploma nas áreas de pedagogia e arte, autora de reconhecidas apresentações de desenho e gravura, está condenada ao sucesso? Claro que está! Mas não apenas na categoria de potencial artístico como também, e sobretudo, na categoria de notoriedade. Na categoria de bravura e determinação.

A artista convenceu-me das suas razões. Ela diz: observo logo sou. Faz, harmoniosamente, referências ao olhar ameno de grandes artistas, numa variedade do pequeno realismo lírico polaco.

O que procura Joanna Latka? Procura o paraíso.

Há paraísos exteriores e interiores. Se calhar o de Joanna estará no exterior, que encontramos quando saimos para a rua à espera de ter uma aventura extraordinária. Quando temos a impressão que somos capazes de construir a nossa própria ponte e abordar com o nosso coração cada uma das pessoas que se aproxima de nós. E com frieza, gesticulando, encarnar essa pessoa. Quando encontramos gosto em observar as pessoas na rua e em encarnar pessoas nos autocarros. E em voltar a nós, no momento em que os outros saem do autocarro, para depois, mais uma vez, entrar no coração do que está em volta, dos acontecimentos, da vida humana. Este é um jogo realista, através do qual entramos na transcendência do ser e, às vezes, até na metafísica.

Não sei para que paraíso vai Joanna Łątka. Mas sei que vai lá chegar uma pessoa e uma artista interessante.

Joanna Łątka was born in a country situated at the crossroads of the spirituality and emotionality of the East and the intellect of the West. In a bygone empire. In a country where, in the time of too many wars, poets turned to soldiers and musicians turned to politicians. In the country of Andrzej Wajda, Krzysztof Kieślowski, Czesław Miłosz and Zbigniew Herbert.
Joanna Łątka was born in Poland.
She was born just before the collapse of communism in the city of Kraków, which was a lucky coincidence. Kraków has always been a major centre for Polish art and culture. It is a place where the old and the new are relative notions. It is a place where the tombs of kings adjoin the banality of grim communist-era concrete blocks.
Kraków is also a major venue for important encounters.
Joanna Łątka has been painting and drawing since she was a child. She’s been painting at home, she’s been painting on the floor, she’s been painting everywhere. She has maintained this spontaneous quality until today, in spite of a thorough artistic and pedagogical training, which sometimes is useful, but is also often nothing short of the taming.
It’s impossible to tame the imagination of Joanna Łątka. Her works are a life diary and a variety of one of the trends of expressionism. They are also both an existentialist question and an existentialist answer.
Her works depict everyday life, but nevertheless are able to raise unusual reactions. Standing in front of them we can feel the authenticity of the transfusion of emotions made by the artist.
Joanna Łątka, with her existentialist roots and romantic structure, is an exceptional artist. She is also a courageous person. Most fascinatingly for me, she finds her home in Portugal. Among the culture, tradition, art, history and the people of Portugal.
Her Portuguese adventure is certainly a very rewarding experience. I’m happy to wish her luck.
